Policies on the Use of Generative AI and AI Tools
The widespread use of Generative AI (GAI) and AI assisted technologies is now shaping the conduct of research. Although Langkit journal recognizes the potential of AI tools when used responsibly in helping researchers work more efficiently and achieve clarity in their works, there is a need to establish policies which will regulate its use to ascertain that these tools will not replace original thoughts and human critical thinking and insights.
General Policy.
The Langkit Journal adheres to the MSU–Iligan Institute of Technology Ethical Use of AI Policy which generally promotes transparency and ethical use of GAI and AI-assisted technologies.
Use of AI Tools by Authors
Authors are permitted to use AI tools in specific, limited capacities that do not compromise the intellectual content and authenticity of their work. However, the following guidelines must be observed:
- Authors may use AI tools for grammar and sentence structure refinement, as well as the organization of ideas to improve clarity.
- The use of AI is strictly prohibited in sections involving core analysis, arguments, and conclusions. The Journal upholds the primacy of original thinking and the generation of new ideas.
- The generation of substantive contents using AI tools is not allowed. This includes generating abstract, literature reviews, methodologies, results and discussions or conclusions.
- Authors may use AI tools to assist with analyzing data collected through traditional research methods. However, AI tools must not be used to fabricate, simulate, or generate research data. All interpretations and conclusions must be the sole responsibility of the authors.
- Visuals, graphs, figures and tables which are AI generated are not allowed. All visual representations must be produced through traditional and sound methodologies or sourced ethically with proper attribution.
- Authors are required to disclose the use of AI tools in their manuscript. The disclosure must include the tools used and its purpose. This should be placed after the Reference Section of the manuscript.
Use of AI Tools in Editorial and Peer Review Process
The Langkit Journal strives to maintain a rigorous editorial and peer review process to ensure that all manuscripts adhere to the journal’s ethical guidelines, including its AI usage policy. It aims to uphold academic integrity, transparency, originality and scholarship rigor in the entirety of its review process. As such, the journal does not allow its reviewers and section editors to use any AI tool in the review process except for the following purposes:
- To check the authenticity and veracity of the references and other resources cited and used by the manuscript;
- To detect plagiarism;
- To improve and refine language use in terms of grammar and sentence structure in writing the feedback.
Submitted manuscripts are considered to be confidential. Reviewers are not allowed to upload the contents of the manuscript to any AI tool as this may violate confidentiality, copyright laws and data privacy rights.
Compliance with Ethical Standards
Upon submission, all manuscripts undergo an initial screening by the Section Editors to assess compliance with the Langkit Journal’s ethical policies, including the appropriate and transparent use of AI tools. Manuscripts that do not meet the journal’s ethical requirements or fail to disclose the use of AI tools where applicable may be returned to the authors for clarification or rejected outright.
